What does the name Kelowna mean?
Kelowna is a city in the stunning Okanagan Valley that has long provided an oasis of sorts for people to come together. According to local legend, Kelowna’s name originates from “Ko-lo-na”, which translates as ‘grizzly bear’ in the native Okanagan language and was said to be heard by those putting their ear up against Suicide Creek at midnight; this referring back to when a man tragically lost his life after being attacked by one. Similarly, “Okanagan” can also be traced back through its indigenous roots with it meaning either ‘rendezvous’ or ‘gathering place’. Today, not only does Kelowna stand proud as being largest city in the whole valley but is celebrated for retaining much of its natural beauty throughout the ages.
